About UF
Rosemary Paris
Psychology and Early Childhood Major
When Rosemary Paris was assessing colleges, she had to consider different aspects of the institutions on her short list. While academic quality was important, as a student-athlete, she also had to weigh the quality of the athletic program and the support she would receive in pursuing both a degree and an athletic program.
“I chose Findlay because it’s one of the finest Division II colleges in the state of Ohio,” Paris said. “The facilities here at the University are equipped with newer technology, and are well-kept,” as well as updated frequently, she pointed out.
But it wasn’t just the facilities; it was the people that made the difference, she said.
“I also chose The University of Findlay because of the great faculty assistance when I came on a couple of visits,” Paris said, adding that classes are small enough that she can get immediate assistance, if needed, in every class.
“I feel that The University of Findlay was an excellent pick for me. I’m able to get the education I need to pursue my career because of the great professors and the wonderful facilities here on campus,” she said.
Paris appreciates what she is learning from her experience as a soccer player, which complements what she learns in the classroom.
Rosemary and soccer Coach Andy Smyth
“The role of a college athlete is to be a great competitor and to never give up. I feel that’s the attitude and mindset I should have in athletics and in the classroom,” she said. “As an athlete it is my job to do the necessary amount of work to be the best I can be in competition for myself and for my team. As a student I am to work hard in and outside the classroom, doing what I need to do to prepare myself for becoming successful in my field of study.”
Paris said both her coach and her adviser help her to identify areas she needs to focus on to excel both as a student and an athlete. “It is difficult to put forth all my time and effort into being a well-rounded student and an above-average athlete. They tell me the areas I need to work on and the things I do well in. They have taken it upon themselves to push me into reaching my potential as a student-athlete.”
She advises younger students to be prepared to set goals and push themselves.
“Be ready to motivate yourselves to working hard,” she said. “No one can force you to be a better student or athlete; it’s up to you. Have a positive attitude and believe that you can achieve anything you put your mind to, and never give up because others before you have accomplished what you’re getting ready to experience.”
