Welcome
The English program is designed to be flexible, offering five emphases within the major: creative writing, general writing, literature, linguistics and teaching.
You may choose the emphasis that best suits your interests and future plans. Thus, while all students in the major take a common core of English classes, you have the opportunity to specialize by completing a number of courses in your emphasis and completing an individualized senior project. Working closely with a faculty member, you have the opportunity to design a senior project that specifically meets your own goals. Depending on your emphasis, your senior project might involve an internship at a local business or student teaching at an area high school, writing a novel or book of poetry, doing original research and/or writing a publishable article for a magazine, or developing a Web site, perhaps even an on-line magazine. The possibilities are limitless.
In addition to providing you with a broad education in reading, writing and critical thinking, our program includes practical training and advising for a career. Courses often incorporate technology and provide you with the valuable experience of writing for a Web environment. Writing courses are often taught in state-of-the-art technology classrooms, and several are taught online.
