This May, Cody Parsons will be starting an internship with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). More specifically, he will be interning in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research in the Division of Drug Information in Washington DC. It is an internship opportunity of a lifetime that he earned, thanks to the Junior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program (JRCOSTEP) offered by the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (USPHS). It is a highly competitive program in which only 20% of applicants get placed in areas such as the FDA, Center for Disease Control (CDC), Indian Health Services (IHS), and many more. There were 151 other candidates for this position. During his stay in Washington DC, his responsibilities will include responding to consumer, industry, and global questions submitted to the FDA via phone, letters, and e-mails. He will have opportunities to attend meetings within the FDA, learn about other opportunities as a USPHS pharmacist and visit places such as the Pentagon and White House. About the opportunity, Cody said “ I expect it to be an amazing learning experience that will give me an edge in my future career as a pharmacist and I highly encourage my fellow students to take advantage of such opportunities in the future. “
