22nd Mathematics Day to Focus on Spirals
Thursday, March 05, 2009

The University of Findlay will host the 22nd annual Mathematics Day Wednesday, March 11, in the Alumni Memorial Union in memory of both David C. Wallach and James M. Schmidt, former mathematics teachers at the University.

At 10 a.m., Judy Holdener, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics at Kenyon College, will present “Spiraling Seashell Surfaces.”

At 11 a.m., mathematical amusements and door prizes will take place in the AMU atrium and the Malcolm Dining Hall of the Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion.

At 1 p.m., Holdener will present “Spiraling Primes and Primary Spirals” in the AMU Multi-Purpose Room.

Holdener’s research interests include algebra, number theory and dynamical systems, and she has been published in a variety of mathematical journals. Holdener was awarded Instructor of the Year and the Tony M. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Award from the Air Force Academy, as well as several other awards.
