Should You Drop a Class
Dropping/Withdrawing from a Class
What is the difference between dropping and withdrawing from a class? Dropping a class can occur within the first six days of a semester. There will be no record on your transcript of you having been enrolled in the class. Withdrawing from a class occurs between the 6th and the 50th day of a semester. Your transcript will show that you had been enrolled in the class, but that you withdrew before the end of the term.
The last day to withdraw from a class is on the 50th class day. This date can be found on the
academic calendar
published by the Office of the Registrar. Withdrawing from a class is not something to be taken lightly. Not only do you lose the progress you have made in the class, but your transcript will show that you withdrew from the class. You should look not only at the reason for dropping the class, but also at the consequences.
Reasons for Withdrawing
You have an "F" average at mid-term.
1. How many grades are figured into this grade? How many grades and/or
points are still outstanding? Can you bring the grade up?
2. How has your attendance been in the course? Have absences contributed
to you not mastering the material?
3. Do you have the background required to succeed in the class?
4. Is there tutoring help available in that subject and have you tried to get
help?
You are overextended
1. Are you working too many hours? Can you cut back on work rather than
drop the class?
2. Are you involved in too many activities?
3. Do you need help with time management?
You are changing majors
1. Will the course still count towards graduation in a general education
category?
2. Will the course still count as hours towards graduation as an elective?
Possible Impact of Withdrawing from a Class
1. Hours--Will dropping the class put you in a part-time classification that
will affect scholarships, financial aid, athletic eligibility, immigration status?
2. Prerequisite--Do you need the course in order to take additional classes?
3. Is the class one that is only offered in certain semesters and by
withdrawing you may have to wait a year or more to take the class again?
3. Insurance coverage--Will dropping the course affect insurance coverage
by a parent?
4. Major--How will dropping the course impact your progress towards
graduation?
5. Grade Point Average--How will dropping the course or not
dropping it affect you grade point average?
