Admission to the Nursing Program


Admission to nursing program at FindlayFirst-Time Freshman​

Traditional​

  • Students must apply
  • Gain acceptance to The University of Findlay
  • Complete all pre-requisite courses
  • Gain acceptance to the nursing program (sophomore year)
Direct Admit

  • Students must have a minimum (Unweighted​) 3.4 GPA

  • Carry a minimum 23 ACT or 1130​ SAT
  • Have three years of high school math that includes algebra
  • Have three years of high school science that includes biology and chemistry
  • Completion of: Nursing Essay submitted through SLATE; the nursing essay should be a minimum of 500 words, 12-point font, double spaced, and address “Why you want to be a nurse” and “Three key professional values a good nurse demonstrates.” A writing rubric will be used by nursing faculty to score each essay submitted. The writing rubric scores the essays based on the main theme or idea of the essay in addition to the structure, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and punctuation used in the essay. Scores are then used as part of the ranking process for the Direct Admission/Early Assurance applicants.
  • Gain acceptance to the nursing program (sophomore year) 
    • Acceptance is guaranteed as long as you meet the minimum requirements to gain acceptance to the Nursing Program (see below).


Transfer students may be required to submit course syllabi or descriptions for evaluation before previously earned credits are considered for transfer. Courses will be evaluated by the University’s Office of the Registrar. A minimum grade of “C” (a “C-” is not acceptable) must be earned in order to receive credit for transfer courses.

Entrance into The University of Findlay requires the following:

  • Students must apply
  • Gain acceptance to The University of Findlay
  • Complete all pre-requisite courses
  • Gain acceptance to the nursing program (sophomore year)

Upon admission to the University, transfer students may declare the major of nursing and schedule courses to complete the nursing prerequisites. After admission to the University, students will need to be formally admitted to the Department of Nursing to take the first clinical nursing course which is scheduled for the spring semester of the second year of the nursing curriculum. All students (including transfer students) will be considered for admission into the Department of Nursing on a competitive basis.
 
 

International Students

Entrance into The University of Findlay requires the following:

  • International students must apply
  • All International students entering Findlay’s undergraduate program must submit a TOEFL score of at least 500. International students whose medium of instruction was in English at the secondary and/or post-secondary levels may apply for exemption from this requirement
  • Gain acceptance to The University of Findlay
  • Complete all pre-requisite courses
  • Gain acceptance to the nursing program (sophomore year)
 

Gain Acceptance to the Nursing Program

  • Obtain a grade of “C” or higher in CHEM 111 and CHEM 111L, BIOL 222, BIOL 222L, BIOL 223, and BIOL 223L or BIOL 322, BIOL 322L, BIOL 323 and BIOL 323L, and ANHS 150 (“C-” is not acceptable). These courses must be taken within the previous five academic years to be considered for admission into the DON.

  • Obtain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 of higher (admissions is competitive)
  • Completion of Application for Admission to the Department of Nursing.
  • Evidence of Current CPR certification for health care providers from an American Heart Association certification program (Red Cross certification is not acceptable).
  • Results of a criminal background check meets the Ohio Board of Nursing requirements. 
  • Documentation from a licensed primary care provider of a recent physical exam. Form is at the end of the Student Nurse Handbook.
  • Documentation of current immunizations including Tetanus/Diphtheria/pertussis (Tdap), ​measles/mumps/rubella (MMR), Varicella (chickenpox- 2 vaccines), and/or titer required, Hepatitis B series, titer required, Mantoux Test, Polio, Mantoux (TB, PPD) Test, including an initial 2-step test and then a 1-step test annually, Polio and additional vaccines required by clinical agencies. This may include an annual influenza vaccine and/or COVID-19 vaccine(s)​
  • Urine Drug Test (negative result).
  • If a student has been adjudicated by a probate court of being mentally ill or mentally incompetent, they must have been restored to competency prior to admission.
