Now more than ever, the University needs to remain at the forefront of EHSS education, and modernizing and expanding the training spaces for the program is essential. Support for the expansion will lead to bigger opportunities for the experiential learning and exceptional knowledge that UF and its students are well-known for, and serve to create essential careers on the front lines of health.

About the Project

Renovation of Experiential Learning Labs

The current home of the EHSS program is in the University’s Brewer Science Hall which was constructed in 1961. The space has served the program well, but is in need of dire renovation in order to adjust to industry changes and to provide flexible learning spaces for students. Enhancements to the physical spaces will also ensure that the quality of the facilities match the quality of the curriculum, and will improve recruiting and retention efforts. This approximately 5,600-square foot addition and 2,880-square foot renovation in UF’s Brewer Science Hall will be designed to increase innovation and meaningful interdisciplinary STEM collaboration, critical components in preparing students for careers in the wide variety of fields that EHSS graduates enter.

Naming Opportunities

Sustainability Lab & Industrial Hygiene & Safety Lab
You can help transform the first floor of Brewer Hall into two modular research/teaching laboratories that can accommodate emergent research and training needs while also improving the safety of the spaces.

The two 1,800 square-foot spaces will include:

• industrial hygiene and safety lab 
• sustainability, waste, and alternative energy lab

Both spaces will offer open floor plans with moveable walls that can reconfigure the room’s layout to accommodate varying research experiments, equipment, and training exercises. This type of laboratory layout will facilitate the extensive hands-on experiential learning exercises necessary to equip students with multiple competencies. Additionally, dividing these innovative laboratories by a glass-walled hallway will promote safety and showcase the exciting work conducted by faculty and students, thereby generating increased interest in the program.


Upgraded Classrooms
Conference rooms and technology-enhanced classrooms complete with modular furniture will provide students with ample flexible workspaces that adapt to unique learning activities and diverse learning styles, as well as foster critical teamwork and communication skills students need to master before joining multidisciplinary teams in the workforce.


Sustainability in Mind
In addition to being ADA compliant, building design will reflect the University’s long-standing commitment to sustainability. The renovated and expanded facility will incorporate sustainable components such as passive solar heating, double-pane windows, and water and energy-efficient fixtures.
