A nationally-televised game between the UF Oilers and Ohio Dominican University was the impetus behind “Spirit Week,” October 14-18. Students, faculty and staff joined in the build-up to game day by participating in activities ranging from the sublime to, well. . . the ridiculous!
UF Athletics and Student Affairs brought back an old favorite, Moonlight Madness, on Monday, Oct. 14. The event featured men’s and women’s basketball team scrimmages, contests, and prizes. Lucky students won Beats Headphones, an iPad and an iPod, along with gift certificates to local restaurants. Prior to the “madness,” Campus Dining Services, Student Affairs and SGA held a tailgate supper on Cory Street Mall, complete with inflatables, a Velcro wall and Big Glove Boxing.
Game day, October 17, was also an “Orange Out” on campus, with everyone decked out in orange moustaches, orange water in the mall fountain, an orange menu in Henderson Dining Hall, orange flags and flamingos covering the front lawn and a team send-off with free orange fan items.
Students danced, played games and designed signs while cheering on the team as buses pulled away heading for Columbus. Viewing parties were held that evening in The Cave and Derrick’s Hangout with free desserts. . . orange, of course!
Although the Oilers were not victorious over nationally-ranked Ohio Dominican, our “Orange Squad” was highly visible in the stands during the CBS Sports broadcast. Great exposure and great fun for both colleges!
