Customize Your Degree
At Findlay, you will be encouraged to develop an individualized major. Individualized majors are to be interdisciplinary in nature and are to cross area lines. During your freshman year, you will work with your faculty advisor in developing a program linking your individual interests in history with other areas. Some of those areas may include: pre-law, business, education, visual or performing arts, science, religion, philosophy, and political science depending on your career goals and life plans.
Interested in teaching history?
You can double major in history and education, which will prepare you to teach history and social studies upon graduation.
Interested in working in a museum or at historical sites?
You can pair your history major with a minor in museum studies which will provide you with additional skills and knowledge about museum operations and how to create exhibits. This minor combines classroom studies with visits to some of the finest museums in the area.
Would you rather be a writer?
The combination of history and English majors will give you the background and skills needed to work as a technical writer, television reporter or communication consultant.

Our professional and dedicated faculty bring experience and expertise in a variety of areas including military, social, women's, world, film, state and local history, in addition to cutting-edge areas such as sports, legal and environmental history. All faculty members are focused on meeting your personal needs and career goals through interactive instruction and one-on-one advising. Collecting Community Stories
Our goal is to go beyond the textbooks and make history come alive. One way we do this is through oral history projects. In the images above, History 101 student Omar Alsahafi and professor Elizabeth Buchanan, Ph.D., is interviewing Fannie Dauterman, a retired music teacher now living at Birchaven Village.
This is simply one piece of the University's commitment to preserving stories and the region's history. Another ongoing effort taking place at the University of Findlay is collecting stories from Hancock County farmers in collaboration with the Hancock Historical Museum. Opportunities like this often lead to hands-on learning for history majors and allow students to enhance their interviewing, critical thinking and analysis techniques.
