What are the benefits of becoming a Writing Center consultant?
You will become a stronger writer as you assist others.
The job offers flexible hours and shows future employers your excellent writing and interpersonal skills.
You will become part of a Writing Center community since consultants care about helping their peers express their ideas.
How to become a Writing Center consultant:
- To be eligible to become a consultant, you must:
- Have passed English 106 with a B or higher at the start of the training course.
- Apply in Workday when the position opens, usually in late fall.
- Successfully complete an interview with the Writing Center.
After you have completed the hiring process, your training begins; you will complete the spring course ENGL 490: Writing Center Practicum. In the subsequent fall semester, you will take a one-credit course, ENGL 480: Practicum/Field Work in English. These classes provide the skills you need to be an effective writing consultant.
If you are already at 18 credit hours when you register for either required class, you will not pay the overload fee for it. Newly hired consultants usually begin consulting midway during the semester of the training course. Students must successfully complete the courses to remain eligible to consult in future semesters.
