What is a reasonable accommodation?
An accommodation is a modification to course content to make the course accessible for students with disabilities or impairments. The goal is to establish equal access and eliminate barriers to demonstrating course competencies.
Tips for Making Your Course and Course Content Accessible
Provide a syllabus with clearly delineated expectations and due dates. Automatically provide students with extra time testing accommodations. If your assessment is on Canvas, please refer to the Help Desk’s guide to
Allowing Extra Time/Attempts on Quizzes. For online content, ensure that it is compatible with accessibility features such as a screen reader or videos with captions. PDFs should be original and not scanned copies. Use multiple modes of learning to engage different types of learners.
When does an accommodation become unreasonable?
There are times when an accommodation would not be viewed as a reasonable accommodation. That can vary by course or even by test. Here are a few examples of when an accommodation would not be reasonable.
- Fundamental Alteration - This is when an accommodation would alter the core learning outcomes of a course.
- Health and Safety - This is when an accommodation would put the student or others at risk for bodily harm or injury.
- Undue Burden - If the accommodation would be unreasonable because it would cause a huge financial burden. (This is rarely the case).
